Buddhisten helfen den Menschen von Haiti

Haiti, schon vorher das ärmste Land in der westlichen Hemisphäre, war auf dieses Erdbeben nicht vorbereitet. Es ist auch jetzt nicht in der Lage die Folgen dieser Katastrophe nur annähernd in den Griff zu bekommen. Es fehlt an schwerer Ausrüstung und Gerät, um Trümmer und ausreichendes Notfallpersonal zu bewegen. Der dringendste Bedarf zu dieser Zeit ist die Suche nach Vermissten und deren Rettung, Feldkrankenhäuser, Notfallgesundheit, Wasserreinigung, Notfallunterkunft, Logistik und Telekommunikation.

Die Weltgemeinschaft der Buddhisten (WFB) möchte den Erdbebenopfern in einem ersten Schritt Soforthilfe bringen. Ein buddhistisches medizinisches Team aus Thailand reist zusammen mit den thailändischen Rettungskräften. WFB appelliert an die Großzügigkeit der Buddhisten in aller Welt mit Spenden den leidenden Menschen in Haiti so schnell wie möglich dringende Hilfe zukommen zu lassen. WFB möchte effektive Hilfe mobilisieren um die Not und die Folgen der Katastrophe zu lindern. Entsprechend den Zielen des WFB und seines Komitees für humanitären Dienst. Inzwischen hat der Präsident des WFB, H.E. Phan Wannamethees das Rettungsteam zusammengestellt. Norimitsu Masamoto, Vorsitzender des WFB humanitären Komitees und auch ein Mitglied der Japan buddhistischen Föderation, arbeitet eng mit dem WFB Sekretariat zusammen.

Genpo Döring, DBU-Ehrenrat, vertritt die DBU beim World Fellowship of Buddhists (WFB), der Weltgemeinschaft der Buddhisten. Er ist seit 2008 Vizepräsident des WFB und zweiter Vorsitzender des Komitees für Humanitäre Dienste. Attention!! URGENT Need for People of Haiti.
We are all shocked by the tragic news of 7.0 magnitude strongest earthquake that hit the impoverished Caribbean nation in more than 200 years, crushed thousands of structures on Jan.12 B.E. 2553 (2010), toppling buildings and causing widespread damage and panic. This is the strongest earthquake in Haiti since B.E. 2313 (1770). Right after the major quake, more than 30 smaller quakes had shaken the island, with magnitudes ranging from 4.5 to 5.9. The dust and debris-covered Port-au-Prince was wracked by dozens more powerful aftershocks, forcing survivors to seek shelter on streets. Tens of thousands of people lost their homes as buildings that were flimsy and dangerous even under normal conditions collapsed. Normal communications were cut off, roads were blocked by rubble and trees, electric power was interrupted and water was in short supply. Many hospitals were too badly damaged to use, medical equipments and supplies were scarce. The quake was felt as far away as Cuba and the Dominican Republic, but most initial damage was found in and around the Haitian capital. The devastation will only add to poverty and hardship already faced by the nation of 8.5 million people. Tens of thousands of people were feared dead and many were believed to be still trapped alive in the rubble. Most people are still too afraid to take shelter inside the buildings. Tremors are still being felt and even the hospitals are treating their patients in the grounds.

Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, is ill-equipped to respond to such a disaster, lacking heavy equipment to move debris and sufficient emergency personnel. The most urgent needs at this time are search and rescue, field hospitals, emergency health, water purification, emergency shelter, logistics and telecommunications.

At the initial step, the World Fellowship of Buddhists (WFB) will provide assistance thru the Buddhist medical team of Thailand which will travel together with Thai rescuer team to Haiti. The WFB appeals to the generosity of all for Haitians who are living in a time of need and suffering to urgently provide assistance in whatever you are capable of and mobilize assistance as quickly as possible to alleviate their hardship and catastrophe. Our synergies in assisting Haitian will help them back to their normal life again. This act is in accordance with the WFB aims and objectives for humanitarian service. Meanwhile, President of the WFB, H.E. Phan Wannamethee has now expedited in setting up the rescue team and Rev. Norimitsu Masamoto, Chairperson of the WFB Humanitarian Committee and also a member of the Japan Buddhist Federation, together with the WFB Secretariat Office are also proceed assistance in this regard.
